Using Google Trends
You can use Google Trends to find the latest searches for each day.
Google Trends analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms you enter, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time. We then show you a graph with the results — our search-volume graph — plotted on a linear scale.Below the search and news volume graphs, Google Trends displays the top cities, regions, and languages in which people searched for the first term you entered.
Hot Trends reflects what people are searching for on Google today. Rather than showing the mostpopular searches overall, which would always be generic terms like “weather,” Hot Trends highlights searches that have sudden surges in popularity. Our algorithm analyzes millions of web searches performed on Google and displays those searches that deviate the most from their historic traffic pattern. The algorithm also filters out spam and removes inappropriate material. For each search, Hot Trends shows related searches, a search-volume graph, and the top cities. We also display news, blog, and web results to help give context about why a search may be appearing on the Hot Trends list today. Hot Trends is updated hourly. You can also choose a date in the past to see what the top Hot Trends for that date were.* “fireworks” spikes right before 4th of July
* “Costume” spikes a few weeks before Halloween
* “Gift” or “present” trends before Christmas
* “Valentines” spikes right before Valentines Day
* “Egg” spikes before Easter
* “Dad” shoots up before Fathers DayGoogle Trends
Google Search-based keyword tool
This tool is based upon actual Google search queries. They are matched to specific pages within your website with your ad and search share.
As Google states, the tool “generates keyword and landing page ideas highly relevant and specific to your website. In doing so, the tool helps you identify additional advertising opportunities that aren’t currently being used in your AdWords ad campaigns. The tool goes one step further by tailoring the keywords and other data (such as the amount of competition for the keyword, the suggested bid, and more) based on your language or country/territory settings.”“The main difference between the Search-based Keyword Tool and the Keyword Tool currently in AdWords is that the former generates keyword ideas based on your website, and identifies those currently not being used in your AdWords account. Additionally, the Search-based Keyword Tool provides more detailed data for each keyword, such as category information, suggested bid that may place the ad in the top three spots of a search results page, and ad/search share. Both tools, however, offer the option of browsing all keywords across all categories.”
Using Google Search to Find the Best Keywords
One thing you will find is that the best tool to use is the google search box. Not on googles home page but in your browser.
Use Firefox browser and use the google search box (located in the upper right corner of the Firefox browser).Example:
Begin typing any one letter like “f”. It will automatically fill the search box with first, all the searches you’ve made starting with that letter but under that will be “suggestions”, that’s what you want. With “f” you’ll find “facebook, firefox, friendster” etc. These are the top searched for sites.Next type in a second letter, like “a”. Now you see the most popular search terms that start with “fa”, like “family guy, fandango”, etc.You continue on using this method to determine the best keywords.
Google Adwords Keyword Tool
We can’t forget the always reliable Google Adwords Keyword Tool. It is tied to data fromGoogle searches, Google Adsense, and Google Adwords.
This is truly the best tool out there, in my opinion. If you sign up for Adwords you get even more information. It will show you the keywords, but also suggest alternatives, and then will also show you how many clicks per month those keywords generate.Google Adwords Keyword ToolUse the Keyword Tool to get new keyword ideas.

SEO Keyword Research Tools made Simple
Keyword Research is essential to making money online. Keyword research is based on theidea of finding out what keywords will work for your online material before you put write your article, post or web page.
It is a case of looking before you leap.
Some keywords have a lot of keyword competition and therefore it becomes hard to rank those phrases. Other keywords may be rank-able but do not have sufficient traffic.
Like the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the desire is to be right in between. There should be enough traffic to make it worthwhile, but there needs to be competition that is low enough that there is potential to rank for the search term.
Let me be strait-forward, the only thing that matters is ranking within the top ten on Google for a search term. anyplace else has little enough traffic that search terms become nearly pointless.
So It Is ....

CONTENTS AT A GLANCE
Google Results Page One or Bust
One Search Engine to Rule them all
Page one is all you should worry about. Do not give up with the easy phrases try to get a little, "long-tail". A longtail is a keyword phrase that is 3-6 words long. These longer phrases will decrease the amount of traffic for successful searches but they make it easier to rank on Search results. For instance "Stop Smoking" is so competitive that you would need a team of 10-12 people working night and day for months to have a shot of raking top 10 for that keyword. But perhaps, "Stop Smoking using Acme Nicotine Gum" might get a few hundred searches a month and be wide open exploitation.
Figuring out what phrases are good for competition, traffic and how hard it will be for ranking is what keyword reserach is all about.
Lucky for you, this lens is all about the, keyword research tools that will make this work possible and easier for you

Best Keyword Research Tools:
Google's Own
As pointed out above, only one place really matters for ranking: Google. Where better to find the verybest in keyword research tools than from the "horses mouth?" Many of the best tools are to be found from Google itself.
After all who would you rather believe what Google tells you about how to rank on Google or what Joe the Rag-man tells you about what keywords work best for ranking. I will go with Google, thank you very much.
Whether you use Pay-per-click or are just using it to find out the volume of traffic and competition Google Adwords may be your first (and possibly only stop) every single other tool, pay and free, are optional. This one is not. If you get nothing else from this lens, take that to heart, Google adwords is the "alpha and the omega" when it comes to Keyword research tools
Often used in conjunction with adwords, the external
Google Keyword Tool is another great find. There are other ways to organize the data, but the keyword tool is a great tool and a great 1-2 punch.
The final two Google keyword research tools work together to tell the picture of whatkeywords are hot, trending, location specific and oncoming. You can use them to get data for an area, a time period, a race or a culture. Whatever it is you want to find out specific keyword information for these tools are your answers.

Mo' Money, Mo' Research Tool
Market Samurai is the recognized leader in keyword tools. It does not display much in the way of information that is not able to be found in a one of the numerous Google tools. Infact it gets data from these tools. The secret is in presentation. It collects and collates data that could take a while to hunt down by hand. You are paying for the ease of usage and the amazing and powerful way that Market Samurai displays the data.
If you are new to keyword research I really recommend going to Market Samurai Dojo (non affiliate link) This has a series of 12 minute videos that show an in depth explanation on keyword research not to be missed. Of course some of the training is specific on using MS, but enough of it isn't that the training is still quite valuable.
I also recommend that you actually hold off on purchasing MS until you have a little bit of experience in keyword research and can make the time you use it worthwhile. There is a free 30 day trial, but I would hold off on signing up until you think there is a good chance you may keep it. Because you will keep it. It is that good. Now if you do decide to buy it would be nice, of course if you use this link, Market Samurai Keyword research Tool

Best Keyword Research Tool Application 2011
Its been just over an year when I realized the importance of Keyword research in blogging, Before that all the traffic I got was only because of my article quality and to some extent a lot of fluke. For the past one year I am really happy with the kind of response my new articles are receiving. There has been a whooping 931% growth on my website traffic and the major chunk of that goes to my efforts on Keyword research.
The below chart shows the amount of traffic I receive from organic search engines when compared to direct traffic and referred traffic, I guess the number would speak more than what I am doing! The essence of this story is that Keyword research is very important and critical component each time you write a new article or even when you start a new website.
The other side of the story
Keyword research is all about identifying which topic is in demand and what should be the keywords I should stress in the article to get maximum exposure on the search results and this also includes your competition analysis. Why you should also do KA is – there are thousands of low competition keywords that are being searched daily without proper results any where, this is an excellent source of un-tapped traffic!
I have used a number of tools for keyword research and for the past 1 year I really enjoyed using Google Adwords keyword tool and Google Trends to identify what is hot on the web and what to write on. Not any more! I did find the best alternative. I really do value every penny I spend and just do not buy anything and everything on the web that looks promising (the advertising industry has the smartest people alive J )
After doing extensive research and analysis today I have purchased Market Samurai Keyword analysis tool and it is hands-down the favorite keyword and niche research tool I have ever used. Its simply awesome in doing the job, I will tell you why.
Finding Keywords: Once you have the Market Samurai, open up the keyword research module and enter the keyword seed to the software, MS would generate all the relevant keywords to your seed keyword. Further you can drill down per traffic, demand, length, sentiments etc.
Next go on to the “Analyze keywords” option and the software would return tones of data from the search engines that shows detailed analysis based on competition, and you can tweak this by adjusting the filter. Samurai returns you with few great keywords that is of your interest.
Analyzing competition: Further Market samurai would go and pick up the top 10 results of the keywords and the owning websites with hell lot of information why they are at top 10. The info includes link age, page rank, backlinks and much more. Based on the color codes of the results, you can identify if you need to select that keyword or not on the basis of its competition.
Rank Tracking: Now once you have written an article or started a website on the keywords, its time to track your progress. You can do that as well with MS. Simply use the tracking tool that would suggest and report the improvement and factors to improve your ranking for the keywords.
Further advantages of keyword research are:
Uncover under-promoted content, and claim it for your site – There’s a goldmine of under promoted articles online that have low Content Authority, which can legally and ethically be “stolen” and republished. Using this strategy effectively will quickly fill your site with content for market testing, and allow you to get quick search engine rankings without writing a single word of content.
Research Articles - Make writing your own unique content a breeze by taking already successful articles, and using their insights to repeat their success for yourself. This is incredibly valuable if you are stepping into a niche that you’re new to, and want to “talk the talk” just like the existing pro’s do.
Uncover RSS feeds that you can republish on your site – Google’s spiders love “spider bait” – little morsels of constantly-changing content that they can munch on each time they visit your site. Feed Google’s love of your content, and improve your rankings, publishing RSS feeds found byMarket Samurai.
Uncover additional sources of media content – High quality web-sites don’t just rely on text – they have images, videos, documents and other media available on their site. Market Samurai plugs into YouTube, Flickr and other digital media sources to give your website the type of rich and deep content that Google loves to give high search engine rankings.
More with Market Samurai: Not only keyword research, you can submit to RSS directories, add media to posts, publish to wordpress and much more with the same application.
These are some great reasons I love this great application!!

You can make a wonderful, helpful web page, but it won't be useful to anyone unless they can find it. Keyword research is all about finding phrases that people are actually typing in to search engines. Then you can include those phrases on your page (or lens here on Squidoo) and more searchers will find your great work.
The tools are mostly browser based. Many can be used without a login. I have included sites that require a login or download where I think they're useful.
I'll add more tools as I find them and get chance to look at them.

Google AdWords Keywords tool
Monthly search volume for related phrases
The Google Adwords Keywords tool is probably the best known and most popular free online keyword research tool.
It shows an estimate of the number of search results per month. (You'll want to learn about broad, phrase and exact settings.) Set the location to US and the Local column will show US searches.
The competition field is for people running Adwords campaigns. It does give an indication of how commercial the phrase is. (It's nothing to do with search engine results competition.)
