Free Image Surfing And Searching

RECOMMENDATION #1
Getty Images RF
http://www.gettyimages.com/CreativeImages/RoyaltyFree

Getty Images RF is the royalty-free version of the popular digital library Getty Images, where you can find a wide variety of pictures, vectors and illustrations, both for personal and commercial use. You need to register to use this resource.

All images on Getty Images RF are available in the JPEG format, and their resolution ranges from 72dpi to 300dpi, according to their size. Prices for each picture vary from $5 to $525.

F11Digital.com

http://www.f11digital.com/

F11Digital is a web-based image collection dedicated to digital photography, where you can browse and download royalty-free images to use for complementing your creative projects. Registration is mandatory to download, to vote and to comment the photos.

All images are in high-resolution, in the JPEG format, and they are available in different sizes. You can download the pictures to your computer by clicking the download button below every image (a ZIP download option is also available), or by sending them as an e-card (a digital postcard). F11Digital also allows you to save the images you like most while browsing the collection, with a digital lightbox (a non-intrusive digital notebook who follows you around the site and keeps track of all the photos you ask it to "remember").

FreeFlowerImages.com
http://www.freeflowerimages.com/

FreeFlowerImages.com is a website that collects images of flowers that you can use for your commercial and personal projects. You can browse through the photos by using either the search field or the list of categories. You can also find the pictures you need by looking at the colors of the flowers.

All the images are available in high-resolution, JPEG format and a size of 640×479 pixels. You can download them with a simple right-click action. The images contain no watermarks and you can request the website owner a larger version of your favorite photo in case you need a higher resolution.

RECOMMENDATION #2

1. PicSearch

PicSearch is one of my favorite image search engines. First of all, it is quite fast. Just type a search query, and it returns all the images that match your search almost immediately. My favorite feature of this free image search engine is that it shows the image size and image dimensions on the image results. This ensures that I immediately know which images fit the dimension that I am interested in.

It also comes with Advanced image search options, which includes searching for only Black & White images, search for images in any particular color, and search for images of specific size.
2. Ginipic

Ginipic is an image search engine that can you download and install on your computer. Ginipic lets you search for images from multiple sources, like, Picasa, Flickr, SmugMug, etc. It lets you search images from image search engines, and photo sharing websites. What I like most about Ginipic is that it can also search for images on your hard drive. So, if you already have some image with you that matches your search criteria, you can directly use that image, instead of searching for one from the web. Download Ginipichere.
3. Incogna

Incogna is another free image search engine. There are two features in it that I like: First of all, it comes with auto complete feature. Secondly, it also lets you search for similar images. To search for similar images, just click on any image in the search result, and then Incogna will show you similar images to that image. Also check out other free software to find similar looking photos.
4. Gazopa

Gazopa is the most innovative image search engine that I have come across. It lets you search for images by uploading an image. It will then find images similar to that. You can also provide URL for an image, and Gazopa will find similar images to that. Here is my favorite part: it lets you draw an image online, and then it search for similar images. I find this a really good option if you have a rough idea about type of image that you want. It also provides conventional image search so that you can search for images by providing a search query.
5. TinEye

TinEye is actually a reverse image search engine. In this, you start by uploading an image, or provide URL of an image. Then TinEye will search all over the web to find where is that image being used, where did it come from, and other information for the image. This is a good option if you think someone is copying your images.

6 Free Websites For Public Domain Images & Free Stock Photos
July 21, 2011
By Tina Sieber

Public Domain refers to material that is ‘publicly available’ and not covered by intellectual property or copyrights. In today’s media, where visual art is abundant, there is a high demand for images, for example for webdesign projects. As a consequence, there are many stock photography websites where artists can sell their photographs or image designs. There are, however, also resources that feature royalty free stock photos that are in the public domain.
Public Domain Pictures

This page is a repository for public domain images. It is maintained solely by its users, who can upload and download images for free. Some photos require a model or property release, when used commercially. This, however, is a general requirement for photos. Material can easily be browsed by various categories, including professional or seasonal photos. Image tags allow an easy search.

The page for each image contains detailed information about the license, the camera used to take it, and links to the artist. The website cleverly supports the creators by offering a premium download and the option to buy the artist a coffee.
Wikimedia Commons

Most images used on Wikipedia are part of the Wikimedia Commons, a database of over 10 million freely usable media files, including public domain images. Recently, for example, the Russian International News Agency has donated 100 historical photographs from their archives. Media files can be surfed by topic, location, type, author, license, and source. Each of these categories has subcategories, to refine the search. You can also search files by tags.

The dedicated page for each features details about the item, including the permission for use and any licenses associated with the file. For most media files you will find that the copyright has simply expired and it has thus moved to the public domain.
Image After

Image After describes itself as the raw base for your creativity. The images provided on this page all underline the same terms of use, which basically are that you can use the images for anything, other than building a page that is in direct competition with Image After.

You can simply search images or use the thorough options, which allows you to sort an image category for example by size, then filter it by color. You can also search based on image tags.

Public Domain Photos

The 5,000 photos and 8,000 free clip arts on this page can be used for any purpose, including commercial. The photos are typically provided in a single high resolution. They are tagged and sorted into categories, offering you two ways to easily find them.

Stock.XCHNG

This resource for free stock photos has been so popular that not only have we mentioned it multiple times on MakeUseOf, it was also recently acquired by Getty Images.

Stock.XCHNG presently contains almost 400,000 photos and many of them are royalty free with no further usage restrictions. You can quickly view the restrictions in the availability field underneath the respective image. Some artists request to be notified or credited, others only require standard restrictions, which are defined by the Stock.XCHNG.

To download material you have to sign up with Stock.XCHNG.
Flickr

Flickr is an obvious resource, yet it is often neglected. Using the advanced search feature, you can search only photos with a Creative Commons license that allows you to use the content commercially and/or modify, adapt, or build upon the content. These two licenses in combination essentially make the image ‘public domain’ in that you can use it for anything. However, the license restriction is that you have to credit the original creator.

If you are looking for very specific images, you should check out the public domain image resources listed on Wikipedia. They feature historical images, as well as visual arts, logos, books, and more.

A site that has been recommended many times in comments to previous articles ismorgueFile. Unfortunately, the site was very slow when I tested it, hence it is not properly included in this article.

Comments:
http://compfight.com? It's a really nice tool to search images on Flickr.

RECOMMENDATION #4
The Best Copyright-Free Photo Libraries
THURSDAY, AUGUST 2. 2007 AT 11:16 PM | BY COBY LOGEN IN MULTIMEDIA
Thousands of photos taken by U.S. Government employees as part of their official duty are free of copyright and free to use. Based on my extensive review of government photo libraries, the best collections below. Or just use the search I made.
Search Public Domain Photos:

#1 — BestPhotos.USAwesome, high-resolution photos of landscapes, sunsets, mountains, flowers, animals, science, and much more. You can browse or search. You can get the highest resolution available for all the images quite easily.

Image Quality: Excellent!
Quantity: Search millions, browse thousands

#2 — Agricultural Research ServiceBeautiful, high-resolution photos of plants, animals, agriculture, and agricultural research. Browse using the categories on the left. The site displays a request form when you choose to download the high-resolution photo, but you can simply bypass it by clicking “download photo”.

Image Quality: Excellent!
Quantity: A few hundred

#3 — U.S. Fish and Wildlife ServicePhotos of scenery, wildlife, people in the outdoors, and miscellany. Enter search terms on the left. Try searching by "Virginia" or "eagle", then setting it to show 100 results per page (on the left).

Image Quality: Average – Excellent!
Quantity: Thousands

#4 — Department of DefensePhotos of soldiers, vehicles, and operations in Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines. Finding just the right photo is time-consuming, because the search tends to return thousands of results. You can also browse by category by clicking "search images by topic". New photos are added regularly. Try searching for "bomber" or "sunset".

Image Quality: Good – Excellent!
Quantity: Thousands

#5 — Yellowstone National ParkPhotos of everything in the park including scenery, plants, animals, wildfires, geo-thermal activity, park visitors, etc.
The library is organized in helpful categories, but there is no search feature. Some photos are beautiful, but many are somewhat unimpressive. Ex:

Image Quality: Average – Excellent!
Quantity: Thousands

#6 — Antarctic Photo Library
Photos of amazing Antarctic scenery, transport vehicles, and scientists.

Image Quality: Great – Excellent
Quantity: Several hundred

#7 — Public Health Image LibraryPhotos of bacteria, disease-carrying animals, patients, public health research, and other topics. The advanced search is more helpful than the basic search. Some photos are decades old.

Image Quality: Poor – Excellent
Quantity: Thousands

#8 — FEMAPhotos of disasters, recovery, community relations, congressional relations, and much more. There are many search options, but the search engine is picky about keywords. If you search for “fire” you won’t get a superset of the results from “wildfire” or “wild fire”. Try different search strings. No browse available.

Image Quality: Average – Good
Quantity: 16,000
#9 — Grand Canyon National ParkGorgeous photos of the park and a few of wildlife. Easy to browse. The only drawback is that the collection is so small.

Image Quality: Good – Excellent
Quantity: 125

#10 — NASA Image ExchangeWide variety of NASA photos including: Earth, shuttles, jets, and experiments. To get high-resolution, click "+ More Details” after performing a search. Unfortunately, high-resolution images are not available for many of the photos. Try searching for "f-15".

Image Quality: Poor – Good
Quantity: Several thousand

Find the Best Copyright-Free Photos on BestPhoto.US

First Runner-Up — U.S. Geological Survey – National ParksHistorical and some modern photos of all U.S. National Parks. Most of the photos are black and white, and there is no way to filter them out, but some of the parks have good color, high-resolution images.

Image Quality: Average – Good
Quantity: Many thousand

Second Runner-Up — Amphibian Research and Monitoring InitiativeIf you need amphibians, this is the place. Unfortunately, no large, high-resolution images are available.

Image Quality: Average – Good (no high-res)
Quantity: 200

Third Runner-Up — Florida Integrated Science Center
Photos of Florida wildlife, alligators, Everglades, and other coastal climates. They have great shots, but none are larger than a few inches.

Image Quality: Poor – Good (no high-res)
Quantity: A few hundred

Fourth Runner-Up — National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Includes photos of laboratories, scientists at work, new-age dwellings, and even Housing for Humanity construction projects. The catch is that the site charges $42.00 per high-resolution photo. This restriction is in place despite the fact that there is no copyright on these photos. If you want, however you should be able to get them free by filing a freedom of information act request with the Department of Energy.

Image Quality: Average – Good (high-res for $42.00 fee)
Quantity: Several thousands
